Ten Things of Thankful: Week 34

I have no intro as I am trying to get this posted before I go…the week-end is too full to waste time on an intro:

I am…

  • Thankful that I got to go in and sub at the preschool a couple times this week…I love getting paid in hugs. And the bit of money in my pocket is ok too.
  • Thankful that I got to squeeze in a meeting on Tuesday which should have happened on Wednesday but was probably going to not happen due to snow on Tuesday night.
  • Thankful that my 12yo has been able to regain better use of his lazy eye. We had been having to patch his good eye (again!) because he’d lost some of the progress we’d made on his lazy eye. We’ve only been doing it for a couple months and he’s back to 20/25. Originally (when he was 5) was at 20/800 (so clearly we’ve made a lot of progress) and I had no clue. I’m such a good mommy.
  • My 10yo got the first part of his braces on…and it went without a hitch. Ask me about the surgery he’s scheduled for in 3 weeks. Go on ask me. Well, I’m not going to tell you about it here because I’m not thankful for it. I’ll post about it when it’s over. And maybe right before. We’ll see how I’m feeling.
  • I didn’t have to go out in the snow on Tuesday night (or Wednesday day).
  • Thankful for my parents in so many ways…my mom kept the PBA and took the 12yo to his eye doctor appointment. This was while my dad took care of my computer issues (on two different occasions this week)…I don’t know what I did to it but it wasn’t behaving. iTunes was giving me trouble (I don’t have a Mac…hence the issue, basically)…hint, hint dad! ;)
  • I found a lovely new brownie recipe.  I am not posting it here because I am a big tease. But I will post it on Friday for Foodie Friday (I love a theme!)…so you have to come back.
  • My steam mop kind of hit a snag. It was the low point on an already frustrating day. I shall not delve into it. Much as I would like to tell all of you how a mountain of tiny things piled up to make me really crabby, I shall decline. BUT wait! I do have a praise from it. Last night I was at Target to gather recon on average prices for such gadgets and I saw an item which I already had in my home. I shall fill you in: When my MIL moved from her house (in which she had laminate flooring in her kitchen) about a year and a half ago, she no longer needed her Rubbermaid Spray Mop (made for laminate and hardwood floors no less). It seemed superfluous at the time but we kept it. As I stood there in Target, I realized that I did not need to spend any money and that I had a way to clean my floors still. I am still going to trouble-shoot the steam mop but for now I have something on which I can limp by. All kinds of thankful…can you tell? It’s the longest paragraph in here.
  • Today I am going to a “symposium” for middle school homeschool moms (yes, all kinds of mis-placed modifiers in there…I am not in middle school but my kids are…I’m sure you understand but I just had to clarify for my own sanity.) Anyway…it is being hosted by a mom in my co-op who has high-schoolers and is going to help those of us who are approaching the “kids being in high school years” kind of help navigate it. In case you didn’t know, homeschooling in high school is a daunting task to consider. So I am thankful for any help she can give.
  • And then coffee afterwards with a new friend. And dinner tonight with “older” friends (No, PA, I didn’t call you old…but if you took it that way, so be it…)
Hop on over to see all the other thankfuls for the week!

  1. Wow homeschooling through hs has got to be an endeavour but I suspect with so much experience already under your belt it will be smoother than most....my neighbor home schooled k -12 ....brilliant...lovely kids in excellent careers now...well youngest still in college...thinking of you guys w the surgery ....

    1. Well, I don't know that the experience will help me so much as having a great support-system and people who've gone before me in it to help us all be successful. My 12yo will only be in 8th grade next year so I have some time, but it's good to be able to consider what is coming down the pike. :)

Thanks for the thoughts...it may not be as bad as I think, but just having my child put under is a little bit scary. For me...he's not really worried in the least except that someone will video him when he's under...

  3. My steam mop ain't right anymore, either. Can't decide whether to take it apart (what do I have to lose?) or just buy something else. It wasn't quite as great as I thought it would be.

We certainly beat ourselves up over things with our children that we have no way of knowing about (that was a terrible sentence, but you know what I mean). I remember taking my son to the doctor when he was an infant and being chastised by him for not noticing he was wheezing. You've done great with them; don't kid yourself.

The surgery will go okay. The surgery will go okay. The surgery will go okay....

    1. Yes, that is a possibility as well. Just curious...what kind do you have? Mine is a Haan and it's yellow and white. If we have the same kind, I say you go ahead and take yours apart and let me know what to do to fix it. ;) And just in case you wre curious, I was never the one to go first through a haunted house.

      I know, I know...deep breaths.

  4. Fingers crossed and prayers sent for the surgery.

In the meantime, in spite of getting ganged-up on by the little things, there are a LOT of Good things here. Not least the eyesight and your dedication to helping it to improve. And that you still have a mop. And that you got to go out to dinner.

Good for you for homeschooling, and although I always thought a symposium was something to do with music, I'm pleased to learn it's bigger and more than that, and that you're part of it.

    1. Thanks so much...surgery is not until Feb 24 but that's not too early for me to start fretting (just a little) about it.

Yes, lots to be thankful for, definitely! :)

  5. I'm glad you son's making such a great progress. Gives me hope for little Violet. Her vision is horrible and she's also having a lazy eye, which we're treating with patching the good one. Not much progress right now, especially since she's also developed quite a bad astigmatism in one of her eyes. So we're very thankful for her glasses that help her see and the access to healthcare that may help her see clearly again one day.

Have a great weekend, Mrs. AR!

    1. So sorry to hear about your Violet. Yes, we started patching him when he was 5 and then we did the eyedrops to dialite the eye 24 hours/day which was actually better because people didn't notice it. Hope you can find a method which will work to improve her vision...it's no fun for the mommy or the kiddo! And yes, access to healthcare is a huge thing to be thankful for!

  7. OK, what about the surgery?
Glad you got some good meetings in and didn't have to drive in the snow (I avoid it, too).

    1. His surgery is in 3 weeks. He's having 4 baby teeth cut out because the roots didn't dissolve and have, instead, fused to the jaw bone. Plus, the two lower canine teeth are coming in at diagonals (and not just a little bit) but are still completely in the gums so they will be "uncovered" and attached to the braces he had put in last week in an effort to pull them up straight. It sounds like a good time, right? ;) Oh, I almost forgot...once those teeth are straight (or reasonably straight) he will have a second surgery to remove the last two teeth with the same issue...they aren't being removed right now because they had to use them as a base for the braces. Good times, good times.

  8. Getting paid in hugs and the brownie recipe sure stood out for me. I sure wish you'd share that recipe because my husband loves brownies and for the life of me, I ruin them every, single, time. So if it is easy and foolproof, please, please, please share.
    Happy weekend to you.

  9. Here are my well wishes in buckets that the surgery goes well. I'm glad you took a moment to make the list this week. Getting paid in hugs and a little extra money....very good things!
My daughter has horrible eyesight and I didn't know it until she was six years old and only because of a school screening. I felt like the worst mom in the world the day she got her glasses and gasped because she had no idea that the world wasn't blurry. It gets worse every year and we are exploring options.
    Enjoy your dinner tonight!

    1. Yes my son was "discovered" to have poor vision when he got his kindergerten shots when he was 5. Poor baby could not see the big letter "E" on the chart...but only with one eye...the other eye was perfect and compensated for the lazy one. I should have assumed it was a possibility b/c I have the same issue. No one ever tells you things like this before you become a mom! Hope you can figure out a solution for her that will fix it or at least slow down the progression!

  11. best on the surgery… homeschooling! (is there a significant percentage of practioners of hone schooling here in the blogosphere, or is that my imagination? and damn! do you guys feel, like unfairly disadvantaged by the lack of snow days? (I'm directing this at your students, of course! lol)

  12. First step in braces marathon done. That's good. The surgery will be fine. It will be good. He will be great. He may say something while drugged and give you a funny post. :)
Sorry about the steam mop thing. I know how happy you were with it at the beginning.
Gotta say, I'm a bit jealous of all the goings out you are having without me. Get out your calendar and put me on it!
