Ten Things of Thankful: Rogue Edition

There's no TToT Hope this week. But since I am still thankful for tons and tons of stuff, I decided to continue my streak and post my thankfuls this week. (Editor's Note: Lizzi decided to do a hop for anyone who felt compelled...I felt compelled. And after I posted my blog discovered that she'd decided to do the hop. Hence this somewhat convoluted editor's note which may or may not make any sense...just keep reading. I think it improves after this...)

However, because I've gone rogue, I decided to do it some somewhat completely (is that even possible? "Somewhat completely"?) and instead listed the top ten Christmas songs/hymns/carols for which I am thankful.

And I did make sure that I went back to review the list I did last year for a different blog hop. I will say that I am consistent because I had listed six songs before I recalled that I just did this very same type of thing last year.  And when I went back to look at it, I realized that four of the six were the same.

So I made changes to this list (which means that they may or may not be the TOP ten songs for which I am thankful but you can go HERE to see my list from last year if it interests you in any way, shape or form).

In no particular order (although I am numbering them, just for my own sanity, not because I am ranking them):

Not because I really like Elvis (because frankly he's not my favorite...sorry Lizzi), but simply because the PBA can do a really great impression of Elvis singing this song. Unfortunately they won't let me record them singing it so you'll have to settle for the original version.

1. Blue Christmas by Elvis

2. Carol of The Bells/ God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen by The Piano Guys

3. O Come O Come Emmanuel by The Civil Wars

For the record, when I was little, the only two Christmas albums (yes, I said albums, because that's what they were thank you very much) I remember having were Johnny Mathis and Andy Williams (and don't you worry your pretty little heads none about it...they will both most assuredly make an appearance on this list).

So without further ado...

4. Little Drummer Boy by Johnny Mathis

Disclaimer: the video for #5 is awful...we're going for the song, not the video, ok people? If you watch too closely you may get motion sickness (Mom, you may want to take your Dramamine before you watch...no joke), and I still don't know what the fireworks are doing in the video but alas they are in there.

5.  White Christmas by Andy Williams

6. Sugar Rum Cherry by Duke Ellington

7. Baby It's Cold Outside by Zooey Deschanel and Will Ferrell

And another entry which piggy-backs on our music appreciation. As the 10yo asked me, "Who is that singing?!? I thought the Jackson 5 were all boys!"

And with that we were launched into an unplanned conversation about puberty. I love home schooling!

8. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus by The Jackson 5

And yes, I included this song on my list last year BUT this is a different version...so it's different, right?

9. You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch by Jim Carrey

And yes, I am well aware that this song is not a Christmas song (as the name would indicate, if nothing else)...but still worth a mention because I love it. And am thankful for it. (And yes, I know Hanukkah is over for the year...just to clarify that I am not completely ignorant of other religous beliefs.)

10. The Hanukkah Song by Adam Sandler

With that...Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

  2. Oh dear, thank you so much for this, Mrs. AR! Funny thing: I have found and listened to (like two or three times) exactly THAT version of the Carol of the Bells tonight :-) Listening to the Grinch now, remembering the various 1st ID Band holiday concerts I got to attend while hubby was in the Army. This one was in the concert each and every time, and their singer was awesome!!

    1. My pleasure! I'm not sure I love this list as much as the list I did last year...and last year's included my 10 LEAST favorite Christmas songs. I'm sure it would include some you might hate as well! ;)

      Thanks for stopping by!

  4. OHMIGOSH! I am absolutely LOVING how many people were already preparing a 'rogue' TToT, and I'm HUGELY glad a) that I decided to throw caution and my previous ideas to the wind, and have a linkie anyway, and b) I ADORE how many people love/need this hop SOMUCH.

Wow! I truly feel we've begun something Big, when people write their contribution in spite of the hop ostensibly not going ahead.

And hey, you're allowed to not have Elvis as your favourite, but you *are* meant to have Bing Crosby's version of White Christmas ;)

    A great, wonderfully musical post.

    1. I was thrilled to bits when I saw everyone else posting lists...and I was glad I'd prepared a list too.

It is something BIG, Lizzi! I am SO glad you put this together and I've gotten to meet you (and others too!) through this. What a blessing! Clearly this hop is changing our psyches...we NEED to do these lists now...whether there's a hop or not. Nicely done, girl! :)

Yes, yes, Bing Crosby's White Christmas should have been on the list...I actually couldn't choose just ONE Bing song so I left him off the list completely. I didn't want the other songs to be jealous. ;)

    2. Me too! I was turning cartwheels to see how many people had still done theirs. It's a beautiful thing :D

And I LOVE having made such wonderful friends through it.

And now I see your justification for no Bing, I completely understand ;)

Still have to send out the cards they are on my table ready to be labeled that's it address labels done, return labels finite, and back label to seal the envelope...

  6. There is not one bad song on this list, Mrs. AR! The Civil Wars are new to me, but I like. Although I have to beg to differ on the Jim Carey one - I grew up on the animated Grinch and so I just can't get on board with that version. Sorry Ron Howard! Now. If you enjoy the Grinch song, try the version by the Whirling Dervishes. The video is a little (OK a lot) strange, but the audio is great - my second favorite version to the Thurl Ravenscroft. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AS_TWNRy7SU
