Resolutions for 2014

So…I know I said I don’t “do” resolutions but I do have a couple for this year.

***waits innocently for someone to ask what they are***

Well, since this is more of a one-way communication, I’ll just go ahead and tell you…I won’t wait for a comment or question which may or may not ever come.

First of all, I want to be a better writer.

I know, you’re thinking, “Well, that shouldn’t be too difficult” but I’m going to ignore the snark and continue.

I want to be a better writer and I feel like there are two things I can do to help make this happen: write more and read more.

I know the reading doesn’t seem like it should help but I am of the belief that to write well you have to read well…expose yourself to words and sentence structures and styles you maybe have not before.

Or maybe have but have forgotten.

Or maybe you didn’t like because you weren’t so, ahem…”mature” (aka old…I am 40 now, remember?)

Exercise those language muscles.

It’s the same philosophy I try to employ with the PBA. Granted, I don’t see it so much in their writing, but I will. I am confident.

OK, that might be too strong of a word…I am hopeful.

Hopeful…

So…my resolutions are: reading for 10 minutes a day and writing for 10 minutes a day.

I figured it was best to start small and make it tiny little chewable 9and doable) pieces otherwise I may not be able to maintain it.

Today, for instance, I am feeling pressed to get this tiny bit of writing in. And I haven’t even done the reading (which I shall do when I am finished.

This may not bode well for the year, but I shall press on.

Now, I tell you all this for a couple reasons: what I write might not always make it to the blog. I want to be more about posting quality instead of quantity.

I am certain you are thinking, “Well then we won’t be expecting much from you this year then, huh? This will be the last post for 2014, will it?”

Enough with the snarkiness, please. I find it distracting. And I am not one who needs distractions.

Also, I would love to have someone keep me accountable to this…any volunteers? Mind you, I don’t need someone to check in every day or even every week…but just every so often to see if I’m staying on task.

Feel free to comment below or send me a PM to let me know you are offering your services, so to speak.
And the last reason I’m spilling my resolution guts is because I need some writing prompts.

Sure, I can always go to my best friend “Google” and find something to write about, but I would much prefer writing about that which you, my adoring public, are curious about.

It can be serious, it can be silly, it can be both…or just a topic you find interesting.

The sky’s the limit…well, not really. We are going to keep it clean. I’m sure that shocks you.

So…I look forward to your comments, messages, messages on FB, texts, whatever. I’ll keep a running list of topics and pull them out as I have need.

Don’t make me beg for me… I am not beneath it, but it is not pretty.

With that…Happy New Year! Blessings on you and your families as we enter 2014!

  2. "To write well, you need to read well." You nailed it! The English teacher me says HOORAY! Someone out there is listening to us! It is very very true and even something like a ten minutes per day goal is awesome.

  4. So I got this book a few years ago and I only got maybe 5 days into it before I "fell off the wagon"... or whatever analogy you want to insert here. But, I thought you might find it interesting. .. it's called "The Write Brain Workbook - 366 Exercises to Liberate Your Writing". You wouldn't have to do the day-by-day thing, but it might give you some writing prompts. Also, I have just Googled "Finish the Sentence" writing prompts before to get ideas.
