Money Talks

For years now it has been an almost-daily battle to get the PBA up in the morning. I, myself, am a morning person (don’t hate), so I just can’t really relate to the concept of having trouble getting up. Consistently that is.

Don’t get me wrong, I hit the snooze sometimes…so much so as of late that it’s actually what I’ve been fasting for Lent. Hitting the snooze. It’s not going as well as I had hoped…that time-change really messed me up. I should have known…it gets me every year!

DST is so ridiculous. But this is not an outlet for my diatribe on Daylight Savings Time.

We’ll save that for another time.

I’m sure you’ll be on the edge of your seat.

No, no…I’m here today to talk to you about money.

And just because I am a little bit off, when I say that, my brain immediately switches to The Dark Side of the Rainbow.

Actually, I’ve never once heard it called that until I was Googling a Youtube video to show you what I mean.

Have you ever heard people talk about playing Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” while simultaneously watching “The Wizard of Oz”? Well, you really should try it. Because it works well together, and frankly it is a little trippy how the two appear to complement one another.

Granted you have to start the album at the right place (and this may come as little to no surprise to you but I did a little research for you, because I couldn’t rightly remember…when Mr. Random and I tried it, it was before I was Mrs. Always Random…so that’s been over 15 years ago.)

So anyway, here’s the scoop: at the 3rd roar of the lion at the very beginning of the movie, start playing the album.

Just an aside, in case you were on the fence about this, actually using an “album” would be a little tedious, as you would have to pause the movie at the end of side one and flip the album over…I recommend just using a CD or playing it form iTunes. But that’s just me…do what you will.

I have no idea how someone figured this out. Frankly, I have a theory but I am keeping it to myself. It may involve illegal activities and I can’t be a party to that, or give that accolades.

So we will simply go under the assumption that it was, dare I say, Divine Intervention (ok, that’s more lofty than I care to go…and probably somewhat sacrilegious; again, stand back from me, lest the lightning strike you).

How about this: it was a pleasant little happenstance. We’ll go with that.

I mentioned all this because my favorite part (well, the most memorable part…and this may be a spoiler alert for someone who maybe hasn’t seen “The Wizard of Oz”, so reader beware!) was when Dorothy stepped into Oz, and the movie transformed from black & white to full color.

When synchronized with the album, it is at that time that the song “Money” begins.

And unfortunately I couldn’t show you the whole movie linked up, but I could at least show you my favorite part.

That was cool. (Wow, I know that my tone and influction didn’t come through in the writing but in my own head, I was clearly channeling a little Beavis & Butthead right there…sorry you had to read that. Don’t judge.)

Wow…you’re learning so much about me today…I watched Beavis and Butthead. At least enough to be able to channel them.

Not saying I’m proud…simply that I used to. And I possibly watched one or two as a refresher while writing this…I want to ensure accuracy in my writing.

That journalism degree makes another appearance...trust-worthy reporting.

Anyway…money is what I came here to talk to you about today.

Money.

It is amazing the power money can have on my children and their ability to get up in the morning.

And before you think me a sucker (which I probably am more often than I care to admit), I am not…at least not in this instance.

I did not go so far into crazy-land as to bribe my children to get up when I called them. Though the thought has occurred to me in the past, I have never acted on it.

This week, I informed, when I woke them up initially, that that they would each owe me $5 if I had to return to their rooms to rouse them from bed.

You can bet your bottom dollar that it worked; within a minute…dare I say seconds actually… those two were awake and climbing out of bed like we were leaving on vacation in ten minutes.

True, this isn’t a good analogy at all if you have no idea how speedy they get up on a morning we leave for vacation, but you’re going to have to trust me…it’s prompt.

In fact, this very threat has struck such fear into them that they have immediately gotten up for the past three days. Granted, I have had to threaten the $5 payment on each of those days, but we’re in process.

I can’t possibly expect them to remember all the time, can I?

Actually, eventually I will. And I stand to benefit from it financially. I'm like that.

So…not that it will always work, but if you are out of ideas for how to awaken your troops, you might give this a try.

Just my two cents.

  1. I think I like the old standby of water thrown in the face. Or sheets yanked off of them. Fortunately, this rarely happens, and never on a school day.
While I want your boys to succeed, I am rooting for you to earn some cash along the way. :)

    1. Yes, I have done the yanking of the sheets. And I have tried singing loudly...preschool songs, no less. But to no consistent avail. This is truly the ONLY thing which has worked more than 2 days in a row. And while I would like to earn some fat cash, I really just hope it sticks this time... ;)
