My Hoity Toity Evening

Now, we Always Random folks (and this includes my parents…sorry, mom and dad) we are not ones to be pretentious and showy about our dining.

In fact we rarely go out to eat.

We go out so infrequently, actually, that I sometimes worry that the PBA’s table manners are grossly lacking.

But this evening we did something truly special.

In fact, I might even say it was a once in a lifetime event.

We drove to the north side…that was not anything special.

But if you know anything about Indianapolis you know that the north side is where all the hoity toity stuff is found.

So in spite of the fact that it was a school night.

And a Tuesday no less (this opposed to a say a Thursday in which you only have to survive through one day of school on a lesser amount of sleep).

We picked our way through the rush hour traffic and if you've experienced it you know about that of which I speak.

And no I am not likening it to some of the worst traffic in the world but I am saying it's not fun especially when you live in Greenwood. Where the traffic is comparatively minimal.

So we drove up to the north side.

On a Tuesday night. And I don't mean to brag but it was kind of nice.

We had a corner booth in a private dining room.

As one might expect from such a place, I thought the prices to be a touch on the high side.

But then again my dad did pay for all of us. Which was terribly generous. As always.

The PBA even made their way to dessert. And I did acquire my usual tax of a minimum of at least one bite from each of them (and it was Tax Day so there’s that too…I love a theme).

I preferred the selection of the 11yo chocolate fiend over that of the 12yo who is all over the board in his dessert taste buds. He will even mix chocolate with fruit. Dare I say might even eat a tres leche chocolate cake, Dyanne.

Following a lovely and filling dinner, we fought our way back home but by then some of the traffic had subsided.

Home again, home again…jiggety jig.

Now...just curious: Does my story seem somewhat bland? Do you find yourself doubting my story? You are wise to be wary of my tale, but I guarantee that it's all true.

I just may have omitted some of the details. And you know how I LOVE details (usually unnecessary onesm, but in this case, it would make things a touch more entertaining.

Would you like to know some specifics? Very well. The evening was more like this...

Now, we Always Random folks (and this includes my parents…sorry, mom and dad) we are not ones to be pretentious and showy about our dining.

In fact we rarely go out to eat in places other than fast food (with us AR parents...the PBA go to all sorts of fun and dare I say exotic places with my parents).

We go out so infrequently, actually, that I sometimes worry that the PBA’s table manners are grossly lacking.

But this evening we did something we didn't necessarily plan and truly it was nothing special.

In fact I might even say it was a “once bitten twice shy, you'll never fool me again in a lifetime” event.

We drove to the north side…that was not anything special.

But if you know anything about Indianapolis you know that the north side is where all the hoity toity stuff is found.

So in spite of the fact that it was a school night.

And a Tuesday no less (this opposed to a say a Thursday in which you only have to survive through one day of school on a lesser amount of sleep…don’t judge me…we’ve all done it. Some more than others, I might venture to guess.).

We picked our way through the rush hour traffic and if you've experienced it you know about that of which I speak.

And lest you be confused…or offended because you live in a truly major city,  no I am not likening it to some of the worst traffic in the world but I am saying it's not fun especially when you live in Greenwood. Where the traffic is comparatively minimal.

So why did we do this? Well, we drove up to the north side for the 11yo's lacrosse game.

On a Tuesday night.

And because of the game start time of 7, we knew we needed to eat beforehand; and I don't mean to brag (because I had nothing to do with the design or build of it...and I'm really sure that you thought I did; my talent and skills are vast) but the Dairy Queen in Noblesville...it was kind of nice.

We had a corner booth in a private dining room...and no, we didn’t have to fork over some major cash for that; in fact, that we were the only patrons should have been a clue to us.

As one might expect from such a place, I thought the prices to be a touch on the high side...because if you’ve ever been to one, you know that DQ is pricey. And it was the north side to boot, so there you go.

But then again my dad did pay for all of us. Which was terribly generous. As always.

The PBA even made their way to dessert…because seriously, it’s DQ; it’s what they do best.  And I did acquire my usual tax of a minimum of at least one bite from each of them (and it was Tax Day so there’s that too…I love a theme).

I preferred the selection of the 11yo chocolate fiend (a “can't ever go wrong chocolate shake”…my name not theirs, but it would be good; if anyone’s asking, I would consider selling that name to them. I prefer cash, just FYI.) over that of the 12yo's (the “Birthday Cake Blizzard”…it was ok, but not chocolate so basically I ask, “What is the point?”) who is all over the board in his dessert taste buds. He will even mix chocolate with fruit, which we all know is like a cardinal sin; to be clear it isn't one, but it's LIKE one. Dare I say might even eat a tres leche chocolate cake, Dyanne.

Following a lovely and filling dinner, we fought our way back home but by then some of the traffic had subsided.

So what happened to the lacrosse game…you know, the whole reason we drove all the way up there on the north side on a Tuesday night? I know you're on the edge of your seat to know.

Well, no sooner had we placed our order and my dad had paid than I received a text from Mr AR (who, clearly, was not with us and was planning to meet us at the game, coming straight from work)…Noblesville had decided to close the fields and the game was canceled.

That information would have been helpful before we got to the Dairy Queen. Which was only 12 blocks from the field.

Home again, home again…jiggety jig.

And because I know you were wondering, my jammies were happy to see me.

Editor's Note: Props to my parents for helping me see the humor in the surroundings this evening...I clearly get my warped sense of humor from them...

  1. Ooooooh, dinner on the north side with the pretty people?! As I read the edited portion, I was wondering what the special occasion was that got you to drag you and your family to the north side for dinner. It's all clear now. :)
