Foodie Friday: Passion Fruit

Well, I believe it's been months since I did a "Foodie Friday" post.

OK, maybe not MONTHS, but it's been a while. Weeks at least. I could go back and look it up, but I will leave that to one of you.

You know who you are.

And as much as I like food, you'd think I would have at least one post a week to dedicate to it.

But alas, I have not. I'm sorry if you've been heartbroken over it. Please forgive.

But never fear...it is back today.

Today I want to talk to you about something you may have never before discussed.

I know that I never have.

The Passion Fruit.

I will admit that I, myself, had steered away from it in the past. Not for any reason other than I didn't like the name.

Sounded so, well, you know...

I am a self-proclaimed prude.

So there. I'll own that.

Don't judge.

However, a few months ago, in the PBA's attempts to broaden their fruit preferences, we tried the Passion Fruit.

You might, at this point, be wondering why I am sharing this story now if it happened months ago. Stick with me...the crux of the story happened yesterday. I'll get there. Eventually.

I didn't have high hopes, because many of the fruits we'd tried as "PBA Fruit of the Week" left us wanting more. Well, actually left us NOT wanting more. We disliked most of them.

At the very best, we maybe achieved a 50% positive review on an individual fruit. At best. Maybe.

So naturally I assumed the worst about this one as well.

I never claimed to not be Chicken Little.

This fruit, as luck would have it, had a 100% positive review.

Of course it did, because it's kind of expensive; I haven't bought it since our initial tasting because it's usually about $1.50/fruit.

So unfortunately that means we are relegated to the boring and average fruit that the grocery puts on sale...bananas, apples, oranges, etc.

You know what I mean. B.O.R.I.N.G.

And the Passion Fruit...they are not large pieces of fruit...maybe the size of a large Cutie. So $1.50 for a large Cutie is kind of pricey, wouldn't you say?

Well, actually I suppose it doesn't really matter if you think it is or not because I'm the one buying the fruit in this scenario, aren't I?

So all this to say...we arrive at yesterday. Imagine my delight when, on our weekly trip to Meijer (although these trips may become fewer and further between...I am leaning towards a "mostly-to-all-Aldi" conversion) we cruised by the clearance rack at the back of the produce department (yes, I'm not even too proud to pass up fruit and veggies on clearance) and

(insert loud and glorious trumpet blast here): a bag of 8 (count them: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8) perfectly-ripe Passion Fruit for a total of...

hold on to your hats...

$1.50.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!

I mean honestly...how could you look at this browish/purpleish wrinkled piece of fruit and NOT help but think, "Wow, I can't wait to take that home and eat it!"

Just for the record, my 11yo was extremely excited about the clearance rack find...because he is forever asking if we can buy more Passion Fruit.

I always remind him that he can spend his own money on them. Yeah...I tell my son that if he wants expensive fruit he can buy it with his own money.

That's the kind of mother I am.

But back to the Passion Fruit...if you weren't sold by simply looking at the outside, I'm certain that the inside will warm your heart right up to it.

I mean...who WOULDN'T want to scrape out and then EAT something that appears to be produced by a person with a wicked sinus infection.

It's a REALLY good thing that this thing is T.A.S.T.Y.

I PROMISE you that it is. If you've never tried it, you definitely should. It will be worth it.

Just try not to look at it while you're eating it. If there's one thing this pseudo-foodie has learned, that is it.

Have a fabulous Friday! Hope it's filled with Passion (Fruit)!

  1. ewww That does look like a sinus infection! I have never ventured into passion fruit and after seeing the inside I know my extreme picky easy to puke kid would throw up, but again so would i a container full of snots does not sound good at all.

  2. Agreed, that looks nasty! I do believe even if I closed my eyes to eat it, the texture would send me running. You just eat it straight out of the skin?
And, no wonder I haven't run into you at Meijer recently. Guess I'll just have to be happy seeing your mom (when I figure out who she is. Ha!)
