Almost Wordless Wednesday (Caution: There is Some Hooting)

Photo credit goes to my dad...there's no way my camera phone would have ever gotten this shot!

Just for a visual, this is a juvenile Great Horned Owl; it was shot (you know what I mean...) a few years ago in the woods behind our house.

Every fall we hear a pair of owls calling to each other and I am happy to report that they have been making their presence known each morning for the past couple weeks.

In actuality, they sound like this to us (audio only...sorry!)

To them, I think the calls sound like this:

And yes, it's the Tom Jones version...who better, right?

There's a visual for you, right?

  1. Wow! That's a great photo. We hear owls all the time, but we've never actually seen them, let alone gotten a photo. (And hilarious song to go with it.)

    1. I'm surprised that you don't have them living in your barn...have you ever looked? And do yours sound like the link I posted or different? I'd be happy to help you research that if you would have need...or desire. I'm certain this offer to research something surprises you not at all.

  2. That is awesome...he's so cute. We hear owls around in our neighborhood, but very rarely see them. We have bats too---I don't think Tom Jones sings for them, though...

    1. I assume you mean the owl is cute, not Tom Jones...I may have to rethink the friendship based on your reply...

Yes, we have bats too...and I think they are SUPER cool. But we've never gotten a photo of them...and no, Tom Jones only sings for the owls I think. It's in his contract (I don't even know why that's supposed to be funny but it made me chuckle).

    2. Yes, I meant the owl... er...I mean, Tom... um... wait...which way were you thinking again? With our friendship hanging in the balance, I can't think straight! *ack! The pressure!!!* Ok, deep breath. ... yes, the owl is cute. Right? The owl. Yes.

Just the other night, in my neighborhood, I could swear I heard the following:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGRZBa4cKWA

*snap! snap!* ..."but when I see you hanging about with anyone...it's not unusual to see me cry..."

It makes perfect sense now.... it was the owls...

    4. Well, if it makes you feel any better, it came up correctly when I got my email that you'd posted a reply. :) And yes, it's not unusual to see me cry either.

Yes, yes, the friendship still stands. :)

  3. Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet! And they sound gorgeous.

We have tawny owls living in one of the big parks not too far away, and they can occasionally be heard at night. I never knew this for ages, but they pair up and one goes "Too whit" and the other replies "Too whoo"!

Owls are awesome, and that's a fab pic you got there.

    1. Well, I can't take any credit...I realized that I failed to originally give my father his photo credit. It has since been rectified. Phew!

I have never seen or heard tawny owls...very cool! :)
